Students at St Andrews University are the most satisfied in Scotland, according to research out this week.

The Fife university is ranked top in Scotland and joint second in the UK in the 2011 National Student Survey (NSS), which was published on Wednesday.

It is the sixth year in succession St Andrews students have voted their university one of the best in the country in the independent poll.

With 93% of St Andrews students said to be satisfied, the university is placed joint second with Oxford and behind only Cambridge in the UK in terms of overall student satisfaction.

The survey compilers canvassed the opinions of around 265,000 final-year students at 115 multi-faculty higher education institutes.

Students were asked to respond to 21 questions, which covered topics such as teaching, personal development, assessment and feedback, learning resources and the management of their university in the survey.

St Andrews students came top in the UK in terms of satisfaction in course teaching and the organisation and management of their university, and third in academic support.

The NSS also ranks individual departments and academic schools within universities.

Among the happiest St Andrews students are those reading theology and Iberian studies (both ranked 100% satisfied), physics and astronomy (99%), business studies (97%), history and mathematics and statistics (both 96%).

Graeme Kirkpatrick, depute president of the National Union of Students (NUS) Scotland, said: “It’s excellent news that for students in Scotland the overall satisfaction rate with their university remains high, but there is a lot of room for improvement.

“The vast majority of students are satisfied with their course, which is great, but there are clearly still serious concerns over the quality of feedback from lecturers and tutors and the speed it takes to get feedback.”

Students at Aberdeen University and Stirling University are the joint-third most satisfied on 88% while Edinburgh University had a figure of 85%.

Glasgow Caledonian University came in with 82% while Strathclyde University recorded a number of 87%.

Dundee University and Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen both recorded an overall satisfaction rate of 86%.

The lowest score was at the Glasgow School of Art on 73%.

The 86% average figure for Scotland was the highest in the UK, with England, Wales and Northern Ireland all scoring an average result of 83%.
