Captain Hamish Robertson, former development manager of the Frigate Unicorn, has died at the age of 78.

Born in Dundee, Captain Robertson had a lifelong love of the sea. A master mariner, he served in Ben Line steamers as a young man and later gained wide experience of top-level management in the world of shipping, marine services and related fields.

He worked around the world and was based in Hong Kong from 1962 with Sworn Measurers, and from 1982 to 1986 as managing director of Gellatly Hankey Marine Services.

Before taking up the post at the Unicorn in 1991, Captain Robertson was managing director with the Inchcape Group of companies. On returning to Scotland, he was also involved in consultancy work.

Captain Robertson was box master and archivist of the Fraternity of Masters and Seamen in Dundee and was instrumental in organising the restoration of the organisation’s standard to allow it to be displayed in the city’s Trades Kirk, St Andrew’s Parish Church in King Street.

He was also the author of a book outlining the city’s seafaring past, Mariners of Dundee: Their City, their River, their Fraternity.

Unicorn Preservation Society operations director Roderick Stewart paid tribute to Captain Robertson.

”He played an important part in the ship’s history and we are all very sad to hear of his death,” he said.

Captain Robertson is survived by his daughters Karen Jane and Sara Louise and granddaughter Mollie Louise.
