Former Dundee policeman James Wallace

A former Dundee policeman has died following a battle with cancer.

James Wallace, who was 84, died at his son’s home in Muirdrum, where he had been living since he was diagnosed last year.

Son Ian is also a retired policeman.

Mr Wallace was born and brought up in Dundee. He left school and got a job in transport through his father, who worked on the trams.

He joined the Scots Guards and served in Italy towards the end of the second world war.

Mr Wallace joined Dundee City Police in 1948 and was a constable who served on most of the city’s beats before he retired in 1976.

At that time he got a job in security, retiring again in 1990 when he moved to Carnoustie, where he lived until his illness.

Mr Wallace was involved in the Hawthorn Swimming Club in Dundee, coaching disabled swimmers.

He was an elder at Lochee West Church and then at Carnoustie Church. He was also a member of the town’s Probus and bowling clubs.

Pre-deceased by his wife Margaret, Mr Wallace is survived by their son and daughter, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
