‘Shovel ready’ announcement

‘Shovel ready’ announcement

Finance Secretary John Swinney has announced the areas where £205 million for “shovel ready” projects will be spent.

He said around 2,000 jobs would be supported across the country in 2013-14 as a result of the green light being given for the cash.

He also pledged the money would benefit projects in Courier Country when challenged in the Scottish Parliament.

Spending on capital projects, which Mr Swinney said will begin this year, includes £50m for housing, £22m each for transport and regeneration projects, £19m for further and higher education, £11m for economic development projects, £10m for health maintenance, £10m for the maintenance of the justice system estate, over £7m for forestry, national parks and tourism and almost £7m for culture and heritage projects.

Local government will receive over £46m to support capital projects that are ready to go and additional to their current investment plans.

MSP Jenny Marra challenged Mr Swinney to guarantee which shovel ready projects would go ahead in Dundee.

He replied: “I am sure the city of Dundee will benefit from the announcement I’ve made.”

Mr Swinney also made reference to support provided by the Scottish Government to the Waterfront and V&A projects.

However, after the debate Ms Marra said more information was needed about which projects would benefit in the city.”
