Brechin City’s Ramsden Cup ambitions came to an end after a 2-1 first-round defeat by Falkirk at Glebe Park, but manager Jim Weir wasn’t too despondent at the end of a hugely entertaining game.
He said, “If there are any negatives to take from our display it would have to be the fact that the two goals we lost came from set-pieces, but for the first 15 minutes we had the better opportunities and then Falkirk scored their goals.
“Thankfully, however, we managed to get a goal back just before the break, which I was pleased about because I felt it would not have been a fair reflection of play if Falkirk had gone in at half-time two goals up.”
“We passed the ball really well at times and we had a 20-minute spell at the beginning of the second-half when we were looking to get back into the game, but Falkirk are a good, young side probably the youngest Falkirk side I’ve seen backed up with good experience from Darren Dods, who I felt did really well for them, and at the end of the day I felt that they just deserved their victory.”
“We’ll now get a couple of good training sessions under our belt and look forward to next week’s League Cup tie at home to Clyde when I hope that we’ll have everyone back and available for selection.”Few chancesFalkirk grabbed the opener in the 26th minute when Dods headed a Mark Millar free-kick into the path of Rhys Bennett who headed past David Scott in the City goal.
They doubled their lead seven minutes later when Dods powered home a header from another Millar free-kick.
City were battling to get back into the game, and got their reward five minutes before the interval, when a Paul McLean corner was headed back across the area by Gerry McGlauchlan and into the path of David McKenna who made no mistake from around five yards out.
Goalmouth opportunities after the break were at a premium with defences well on top and City were unable to open up a Bairns defence well marshalled by Dods.
