Dundee manager Barry Smith should be a candidate for manager of the year, according to former Dark Blues’ striker Leigh Griffiths.
Smith has masterminded a 17-game unbeaten run in division one since taking over the Dens men after they went into administration in October.
Should he keep the club safe from relegation, Griffiths, who made a £150,000 move to Wolves in January, believes he should be in the running to be named Scotland’s top boss when the awards are dished out at the end of the season.
“What Barry has done at Dundee has been unbelievable,” said Griffiths.
“I can’t speak highly enough of him.
“When you think that he was thrown into the position in very difficult circumstances it is even more amazing.
“He has to be a contender for manager of the year.
“The lads love playing for him and he has the respect of the whole dressing-room.”
A lot of people are expecting Dundee to slip up and they face a tough away trip to Partick Thistle on Saturday.
However, Griffiths reckons they can keep their unbeaten run going.
“To go 17 games unbeaten in the league is a great achievement,” he added.
“I know the kind of spirit the boys have and there isn’t any reason why they won’t keep it going.
“I loved my time at Dundee and still look for the results every week.”
