Forfar 0 Brechin 2: On-loan stars shine for visitors

Brechins on-loan striker Craig Wighton challenges Forfars Michael Dunlop.

Brechin City stretched their unbeaten run to 11 games with a comfortable and deserved derby victory over League One title challengers Forfar Athletic.

The Loons slumped to their first home defeat of the season as goals in either half, from two of City’s on loan stars, Jamie Mason and Craig Wighton, gave City the bragging rights.

Manager Ray MacKinnon agreed that his side’s victory was well deserved.

“I think so, we played well and this is not an easy place to come.

“We were two nil up in the last game so we know what Forfar can be like. But I think we played very well. I thought we played some new stuff and I am really pleased with the result.”

There was particular praise for 17-year-old Wighton, on loan from Dundee.

“We didn’t really play to his strengths today but when we did get the ball to him around the box his feet are frightening! He is going to cause teams a lot of problems.”

A tentative start from both sides saw them probe away at each other, but it was City who made the early breakthrough in the 12th minute. Bobby Barr powered forward from midfield and slipped a neat pass to Masson and he clipped home a shot from a tight angle.

Forfar had far more of the ball and the pressure after the break but never looked like finding that final pass.

Brechin made them pay with a second goal in the 80th minute. Lovely work from Wighton saw him slip a ball to Trouten and he calmly scooped a shot over the exposed Forfar keeper.

Forfar manager Dick Campbell said: “I have no complaints. It is easy to criticise but I definitely didn’t think we were up to the game today.”
