Dundee stayed top of the Championship thanks to a narrow 1-0 win away to Dumbarton.

Three points were all that mattered for the Dark Blues in the title race and they duly got them after substitute Peter MacDonald’s winner eight minutes from time.

But the scoreline did not tell the story of a remarkable game which could have gone either way in truth.

The hosts had by far the better of the first half and felt aggrieved when a Chris Turner headed ‘goal’ was disallowed in 13 minutes for what referee Brian Colvin deemed to be a push in the penalty area.

Dundee keeper Kyle Letheren was at fault, allowing the weak header to squirm through his legs and over the line, so the visiting number one would have been relieved to see the effort discounted.

The visitors were much better in the second half and got themselves in front when MacDonald capitalised on slack play by the Sons at the back to squeeze the ball home from a tight angle.

All that was almost undone two minutes later though when Kyle Benedictus bunded Chris Kane over in the box and referee Colvin pointed to the spot.

However, sub Bryan Prunty put his penalty down the middle and Letheren was equal to it to earn Dundee what could prove to be a priceless victory.
