Montrose 3 Brora Rangers 1 (agg 3-2): Gable Endies fight back to remain in SPFL

Montrose will remain in senior football after a sensational second leg clash at Links Park.

The club risked dropping into the Highland League if they failed to overturn the 1-0 first-leg deficit against Brora Rangers.

This season, for the first time, teams from the Highland and Lowland Leagues had the chance to gain promotion into the divisions above.

Kick off was delayed for 15 minutes to allow the large home crowd to get into the ground.

Scott Johnston’s strike just before half-time gave Montrose the perfect start.

But just after half-time Brora’s Colin Maclean equalised from a corner.

Brora were reduced to ten-men shortly afterwards when captain Steven Mackay was sent off.

Two goals in quick succession turned the tie in the home side’s favour.

Marvin Andrews scored a bullet header before captain Garry Wood’s sensational long distance strike sealed it.

The club had warned fans earlier this week not to invade the pitch on Saturday in an attempt to cause the match to be abandoned, if defeat looked likely.

A pitch invasion did happen though – but a jubilant one as the fans piled onto the pitch at the end to celebrate with the players.

Marvin Andrews was lifted high in the air by his jubilant team mates who sang: “He scores when he wants! Marvin Andrews…he scores when he wants!”
