Ray McKinnon is the new Raith Rovers boss

Ray McKinnon.
Ray McKinnon.

Ray McKinnon will leave Brechin City to become the new manager of Raith Rovers.

The highly-rated 44-year-old was offered the job at Stark’s Park earlier this week but he was also on the short-list for the vacant managerial post at St Mirren.

He was interviewed by the Buddies directors on Wednesday, however St Mirren yesterday decided to appoint Dumbarton boss Ian Murray as their new manager.

That left the way clear for McKinnon to take over at Raith and he will now occupy the hot-seat vacated by Grant Murray who was sacked last month after five straight defeats.

Rovers have made no secret of the fact that they will be wanting their new manager to have the team playing attractive, winning football.

That is something the former Dundee United, Nottingham Forest and Aberdeen player who also had two brief spells with Raith delivered with Brechin.

City recently failed to overcome Alloa in their Championship play-off semi-final but the job McKinnon was doing at the Glebe was recognised by the fact he won three out of four League One Manager of the Month Awards at the start of this year.

Brechin chairman Ken Ferguson admitted in yesterday’s Courier that he had hoped his manager would stay however he will now have to begin the search for a new man to fill his shoes.
