East Fife 3 Elgin 1: Naysmith says side are finding form at right time

Gary Naysmith says his Fifers are in top form ahead of this week’s play-off encounters with Stenhousemuir.

The Methil men booked their place in the League One promotion deciders when they saw off Elgin 3-1 on Saturday.

The club had been in fourth spot for some weeks, and on Saturday cemented it when they dashed any slim hopes that Annan had of snatching their place.

A brace from Kevin Smith was added to by a strike from Derek Riordan, with Jamie Reid grabbing a late consolation.

Naysmith can put the 2014/15 league campaign to the back of his mind and focus on guiding his side up a division through the play-offs.

He said: “It was a strange game for us to prepare for. We were 95% already there before kick-off but there’s the 5%, that pessimistic side of me, that was thinking ‘what if we don’t make it’? It’ll be one of the biggest disasters in Scottish football.

“Before we knew it, Annan were two goals up and we had missed a couple of chances.

“It’s now a case of looking forward to Wednesday.

“We’ve won three games out of our last four, so that’s good enough for me.

“We’ve tried to do our homework but without counting our chickens.

“The last three or four weeks we’ve had our scout split his time between Stenhousemuir and Ayr,” he said.

“Luckily this weekend he was at Stenhousemuir, so we’ll have his report and also some video footage.

“We’ll then prepare the players as normal.”

Craig Thomson had gone close for the visitors during an opening spell of the game in which the Fifers failed to settle.

But they soon did, and took the lead when Kevin Smith neatly finished off a Scott Smith cross.

To their credit Elgin continued to battle back, but it was East Fife who were to go on and get the crucial second goal.

Smith was again the man to get on the scoresheet, grabbing his 12th goal of the campaign when he fired home an Allan Walker cut-back.

Any ambitions that Elgin had of getting themselves back into the game were put to bed when Riordan made it 3-0.

Again the Fifers were slick down the wing and the ball made its way to the former Celtic man, who picked his spot and beat Stewart Black.

The scoring was completed in fine style when Elgin got the goal their play merited when Jamie Reid curled a stunning effort past Allan Fleming.
