Morton v Raith Rovers: Relaxed Murray will not rush into January panic buys

Raith Rovers manager Grant Murray insists any player he brings into the club in the January transfer window must be the right fit for the club.

Like most bosses in the Championship, Murray is keen to add to his playing pool if possible and has been looking around to see what is available, but stressed he has no particular position in mind which he feels needs attention.

With key players coming back or nearing a return, the Rovers boss maintains he will not be rushed into any panic buys this month.

“It’s that time of the year, the transfer window, where everybody gets asked the question,” he said.

“I’m like any other manager, there are players out there and some of the bigger teams want players out on loan, but they’ve got to be right for the squad and for the club as well.

“It’s all down to finances as well, though.

“We’ve not really had that conversation as yet, but I’m sure if there was money available they would come and tell me.

“The players have got to be right for the club rather than taking someone in for the sake of it.”

Asked if he felt the need to strengthen, Murray said: “Not if you are winning games.

“If you lose games then you get asked the question: ‘Are you going to strengthen? Are you going to strengthen?’ but because of the transfer window it’s always a question that gets fired at you.

“If we strengthen we strengthen, if we don’t we don’t.

“We started the season well with the squad that we had and they got us to where we are just now, so at the end of the day those are the players who have done that so far.”

Raith full-back Jason Thomson will miss Saturday’s game away to Morton after his sending off against Dundee, and it is just yet another selection problem for the Kirkcaldy club after weeks of key absentees.

Winger Joe Cardle only recently returned from suspension, while keeper David McGurn and defender Paul Watson have been long-term casualties with Achilles and foot problems respectively.

Rovers defender Laurie Ellis is back fully fit, however, and winger Grant Anderson and striker Greig Spence both returned to training this week and should be available if they have no adverse reaction.

Watson is also said to be on the recovery trail following his broken foot and could be back in early February.

“We’re getting there,” Murray said.

“It’s just a case of getting numbers back up and they’ve come through training with no problems whatsoever, so we’ll assess them later in the week and see how they are feeling.

“You want as many players to select from as possible. You can only start with 11 but it’s a manager’s problem.

“You would rather have a selection headache to deal with and we’ve been quite fortunate we didn’t have many injuries or suspensions to deal with earlier in the season.

“Once Davie (McGurn) got his injury there was a wee domino effect Paul Watson, Liam Fox, Grant Anderson, Greig Spence has picked up a couple of niggles, Laurie Ellis missed a game through injury. So it’s been a bit of a problem for us.”
