East Fife boss keeping faith despite descent to foot of league

East Fife manager Willie Aitchison believes his side will come good, despite slipping to the foot of League One on Saturday.

The Fifers’ 2-0 loss against Stranraer at Stair Park sees them rooted to the bottom of the division heading into this weekend’s home visit of Airdrieonians.

However, the Bayview boss insists basic errors have contributed greatly to where they find themselves.

“I thought we knocked it about really well and put the pressure on them but we made two clangers and it cost us the result,” he said.

“You can’t legislate for that. You go out and coach all week and you do the right things and the boys have done really well in training.

“They started really well, we got on top of the game pretty quickly and I felt we started to control the game a wee bit, being the away team. But if you make a mistake it will cost you.

“It is difficult and we dropped a place in the league but what we’re trying to do is keep them together and keep them focused. I think we’ll come good in the next few weeks.

“I think you can see the football they are trying to play and if we can get a couple of breaks and a couple of finishes and just cut out the wee silly mistakes that are causing the odd goal here and there against us, I think we’ll be OK.”

The Fifers will be hoping Gary Naysmith will be available for the weekend’s home fixture after the defender was forced off with a knock near the end of Saturday’s defeat.

“He got a dead leg just before half-time and it got tighter and tighter as the game went on,” Aitchison added.

“It was a shame because he was sitting in a very prominent position he was almost playing left midfield for a left back and his deliveries were superb because he was putting them across the face of the strikers and switching the play very well, so it was disappointing he had to go off.

“We just decided then that the game was going against us, we’ll go 3-4-3 and just try and push the extra big man up there.

“That’s when we really started to look for the delivery from the wide area and it just wasn’t there, so that was a wee bit frustrating.”
