Montrose failed to narrow the gap at the top of Ladbrokes League Two after going down to a heavy 6-1 defeat from Queen’s Park at Links Park last night.

Although the hosts got off to a great start grabbing the opener in the fifth minute the visitors scored three goals without reply before half-time, adding three further goals just before the end to complete an emphatic victory.

The home side got off to the perfect start and scored the opening goal after just five minutes.

Scott Johnston collected the ball wide on the left and pushed forward before delivering a dangerous cross into the Queen’s Park penalty box. It was only half cleared by the defence into the path of Adrian Mallangary, who slotted the ball home from two yards out.

However, the visitors hit back and notched the equaliser nine minutes later when Christopher Duggan played a short pass to Sean Burns.

He then laid it on for Paul Woods to fire the ball past Ross Salmon in the Montrose goal.

The Spiders grabbed the lead in the 23rd minute when Salmond allowed a free-kick from Burns to slip from his grasp, with the ball rolling into the empty net.

The visitors pressed forward and it was incredibly 3-1 a couple of minutes later when a free-kick from Burns cannoned off the post into the path of Ryan McGeever and he blasted the ball home.

Montrose pushed forward at the beginning of the second half but the Spiders came very close to increasing their advantage in the 61st minute when a cracking 25-yard drive from Vincent Berry came back off the post before being cleared.

The home side were pushing forward in a bid to reduce the deficit but the Queen’s Park defence were giving very little away and Montrose were finding it difficult to create any clear-cut chances.

The visitors wrapped up the points 12 minutes from time when Paul Woods picked up the ball around 20 yards from goal and unleashed a blistering shot which took a slight deflection on its way past a helpless Salmon.

Queen’s rubbed salt into Montrose wounds six minutes before the end when Paul Woods finished off a great move to slot the ball past Salmon, with Burns adding a sixth goal right at the death to complete the home side’s misery.

Afterwards Montrose boss Paul Hegarty said: I’m embarrassed, annoyed upset and ashamed.

“I can only apologise to the Montrose supporters for that extremely poor performance.”
