Brechin 4 Airdrie 3: Trouten’s last-gasp strike brings relief for City boss

Ryan Donnelly's header finds the Airdrie net to open the scoring.

Brechin City picked up their first league points since October after a 4-3 win over League One basement club Airdrie at Glebe Park.

City were 3-0 up at one stage but the Diamonds incredibly fought back to level the scores with City’s problems exacerbated with the sending-off of midfielder Greg Cameron in the 63rd minute.

However, a last-gasp winner from Alan Trouten deep into injury-time kept the points at Glebe Park. Relieved City boss Ray McKinnon said: “We’ve been conceding ridiculous and crazy goals recently and it happened again this evening.

“We spoke to the players before the game about stopping crosses going into the box but we lost two goals in that manner this evening and it’s simply not good enough.

“It’s absolutely ridiculous to be 3-0 up and nearly lose the game. Overall, I think we deserved the victory and I’m delighted that we’ve got the three points but we made things extremely difficult for ourselves.”

City should have opened the scoring after 17 minutes when Trouten intercepted a pass-back and rounded Diamonds keeper Daniel Rodgers but his shot cannoned back off the post.

The opener, however, was only delayed by seven minutes. Brechin won a corner on the right and Derek Carcary’s inch-perfect cross was headed home by former Airdrie striker Ryan Donnelly.

City kept up the pressure and doubled their advantage just four minutes later when Trouten picked up the ball at the edge of the penalty area and weaved his way into the box before unleashing a right-foot drive which sailed into the top corner of the net.

The home side made it 3-0 11 minutes into the second-half with a well-worked goal from Andy Jackson.

Johnny Brown picked up the ball wide on the right and pushed forward before releasing Jackson who kept his cool before slotting the ball beyond Rodgers.

The visitors hit right back though and reduced the deficit four minutes later when a cross from Caolan McAleer was finished off by former City striker Jim Lister.

City were dramatically reduced to 10 men just three minutes later when Cameron was shown a red card for retaliation after a challenge from Airdrie striker Lewis Coult.

The visitors made the extra man count and pulled back another goal with eight minutes remaining when Coult swept home a cross from Lister.

The Diamonds dramatically levelled two minutes into injury-time when Nathan Blockley fired home from close-range.

However, the drama was far from over as McKinnon’s men grabbed a sensational winner a minute later when Trouten fired home from just two yards out.
