The reality of becoming a championship-winning boss so early in his fledgling managerial career will only begin to hit home when Paul Sheerin holds the division three trophy aloft.
The Lichties will be presented with their precious prize and first piece of national silverware at Saturday’s home game against Elgin City.
The sense of achievement and excitement at Arbroath has been reflected in all the congratulatory messages that have been flooding in to Gayfield since promotion was secured by beating Montrose 10 days ago, some coming from as far afield as Canada and Australia.
Following a disappointing defeat (3-0) to Annan Athletic, Sheerin is hoping to sign off on a high note against Elgin and then he can reflect on the job he has done since taking over as player-boss almost a year ago.
“It will be a nice day on Saturday and a good end to the season for everyone at Arbroath,” said Sheerin.
“I know we clinched the title by beating Montrose, but it may only sink in for me when we are presented with the trophy.Victory”I hope the occasion lifts the players and they can finish things off with a victory over Elgin.
“Promotion has been the be-all-and-end-all for us this season and we will get our fantastic reward when we lift the trophy.”
Sheerin will have a task on his hands trying to keep star men like Gavin Swankie at the Lichties, but he is willing to give it a try.
“All we can do as a club is put offers to players and hope they agree to stay,” said Sheerin.
“We are in the process of sorting out the budget for next season, but there are no megabucks in the second division either. You can only do what you can.
“If we keep them then that’s great, but if we have to rebuild then we have shown we can do that too.”
Hat-tip to Auld Lichtie for correction.
