Dalgety Bay club shock the favourites in league cup final

An amateur football team from Dalgety Bay have been celebrating a cup final victory over a team that hasn’t been beaten for three years.

Dalgety Bay AFC beat Kennoway 3-1 in the Peter Omand League Cup final in Lochore on Friday two goals from Sam Graham and a penalty from David Elliot securing the victory in spite of a late Kennoway fightback.

Club chairman Lawrie Sullivan told The Courier he still couldn’t believe the side, which plays at the Dalgety Bay leisure centre, had won.

He said, “This is the first cup final that they have won. For the last 10 minutes of the game I felt like my heart was in my mouth.

“Eventually I had to go and sit in the dugout. They were all over us towards the end.”

Mr Sullivan, whose funeral directors business sponsors the team, also paid tribute to coach, Andy Healy.

He said, “The tactics that he played that night just paid off.”

The club has not always enjoyed such success and several years ago was looking for backers.

They could not find any in the area but, when The Courier reported on their plight, Mr Sullivan stepped forward.

He and the committee concentrate on fund-raising, leaving Mr Healy to focus on the team.

The combination has clearly paid dividends as the team has been promoted from the second to the first division and then from the first to the premier league in successive seasons.

However, Mr Sullivan said the cup win capped all of that.

Dalgety Bay play in the Fife Amateur Football Association premier league.
