Dundee v Morton: John Brown wary of visitors

Dundee boss John Brown has warned his players that they will face a Morton side at Dens absolutely bouncing with confidence.

The Greenock outfit stunned Celtic at Parkhead on Tuesday night, dumping the Hoops out of the League Cup thanks to a Dougie Imrie penalty.

That result was even more astonishing as Allan Moore’s side have struggled so far in the Championship, sitting second bottom of the league.

However, Brown believes that Morton, who only just missed out on promotion last season to Partick Thistle, will soon start clawing their way up the table.

He said: “Morton will come here on such a high. They are probably in a false position in terms of the league, but one victory in this division can take you right up the table.

“That’s how tight it is, so I would not read too much into where Morton are at. Allan has a good experienced side that was just pipped for promotion last season by Thistle.

“That taste of getting close to promotion will have given them massive confidence, as will the result the other night, so we have to make sure we are prepared for that.”

As Morton were pulling off their shock win in the East End of Glasgow, Dundee were losing 1-0 at home to Inverness in the same competition.

The Dark Blues took plenty of plaudits for their performance but Brown insists it is points not praise he is looking for as his side gear up for the next fixtures against Morton, Cowdenbeath and Dumbarton.

He said: “We need to reproduce that level of performance (against Inverness), but we have to finish better.

“It is another game where we took a lot of plaudits for the way we played, but at the end of the day we got beaten.

“The display lifted the boys and we have to take that into the league games coming up. They are crucial matches for us. We have Morton at home and then two on the road.

“We need to pick up maximum points, starting on Saturday. We need to get back in the hunt with the teams at the top of the table and we are not far off it.”

Brown’s side could have had an equaliser against Inverness on Tuesday if it had not been for a wonder save by Inverness keeper Dean Brill from a Craig Beattie shot.

However, the manager is certain that as the former Scotland striker edges closer to full fitness, he will soon start hitting the back of the net for the Dark Blues.

He said: “There is a bit of a balancing act with Craig at the moment. But if we have the likes of Nicky Riley, Ryan Conroy and Jim McAlister creating opportunities in the penalty box then sooner or later he will take them.

“He has a good pedigree there and we will persevere with him.”

Brown should have almost a full squad to choose from against Morton.

He added: “We picked up one or two knocks against Inverness, but Kyle Benedictus trained today and Kevin McBride is back from suspension so he is available for us.

“Matt Lockwood was feeling sick before the game and in the warm-up but he is better now and is back training.”
