Dundee striker got a kick out of set-piece stunner

Peter MacDonald says his free-kick which fizzed into the Forfar net on Tuesday was one of the best of his career and now he is determined to hit more dead-ball crackers for Dundee.

“Peaso” beat former Dark Blues legend Rab Douglas all ends up in the first period of extra-time in the Ramsdens Cup tie with his long-range effort to give the home side the lead against a brave Loons side.

The striker added his second and his side’s third to put a gloss on the result with the last kick of the ball.

MacDonald thinks his two-goal tally will be a big boost to his confidence.

He said: “I caught it well and haven’t hit too many better than that. I was hitting a few in the warm-up and catching them quite well so I just decided to have a pop.

“I struck one like that for Morton last season so hopefully there’s a few more to come for Dundee this season.

“It takes a good goal to beat a quality keeper like Rab Douglas, so it doesn’t do your confidence any harm.”

Before MacDonald’s free-kick hit the net, it had been another frustrating game for the Dark Blues as they struggled to break down a resolute Forfar rearguard.

That was a problem they also experienced against Alloa in the league last Saturday with the fans quick to make their displeasure known.

However, MacDonald insists it is only a matter of time before John Brown’s new-look side hit their stride.

He said: “It’s been a hard start and the fans have been a bit frustrated. We’ve got new players here who are taking time to gel and once we do, we’ll be much better.

“Everyone expects us to win the league this season so there’s an expectation which we have to deal with.”

The Forfar game came at a cost with several players, including MacDonald, picking up knocks and one of those, Iain Davidson, is set to miss Saturday’s game at Raith with an ankle injury suffered when a Forfar player landed on him.

Meanwhile, Colin Nish who was released by Brown at the end of last season has joined Dundee’s Championship rivals Dumbarton.

The 32-year-old striker will combine playing with coaching the Sons under-19 side.
