Blair Spittal insists he hasn’t been looking at the league table but his Celtic-supporting mates have been.
The Tangerines moved two points clear at the top of the Premiership thanks to Saturday’s 2-0 win over St Johnstone.
They can go five clear if they beat Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Friday night before the rest have kicked off but Spittal isn’t getting too excited by it all.
However, he did admit that United’s lofty position has been noticed by a few of his friends who are more used to their own team leading the way in Scotland.
“Quite a few of my pals are Celtic fans so they have been giving me a bit of stick about us being top of the league,” said Spittal.
“It’s too early in the season to say they are worried but they are still dishing it out to me.
“Hopefully, we can keep our good run going and see where it takes us.”
He continued: “It has been really good since I joined. I have enjoyed it so I just hope it keeps going.
“I knew when I came here we would be a good team and all the boys are just working hard, trying to keep the good start going.
“The lads have been brilliant since the start of the season and being top of the league is no more than we deserve.
“But I don’t think the boys are looking at the table at this stage because it is still very early.”
Spittal was wanted by a few clubs, including Dundee, before he left Queen’s Park for United in the summer.
Having been involved in six matches already this season including the midweek League Cup derby win over the Dark Blues Spittal is completely convinced he made the right decision.
He said: “I didn’t really have a choice to make because when I came here to speak to the manager Jackie McNamara at first this was the only place I wanted to come.
“I made my mind up straight away. I knew this was where I would come. It is flattering that a few teams were after me but I didn’t ever believe I’d go anywhere other than United.
“The manager has given young players their chance before so it seemed the natural place to come.
“Hopefully, if I keep doing what I’m doing I will get the opportunities.”
