Dundee United boss Jackie McNamara has thanked club chairman Stephen Thompson for pushing the boat out to bolster his squad.
The Tangerines signed Scottish Cup hero Morgaro Gomis last week for his second spell at the club, with another former fans’ favourite Mark Wilson being snapped up in August.
Both these deals were secured despite the fact the manager had already used up this season’s budget but Thompson and the board sanctioned the signings regardless.
McNamara said: “It’s great to get Morgaro. Since he’s come in he has impressed us in training, which is why we have signed him.
“I think he will be a really good addition to the squad. He’s got a good bit of experience and that’s important for a squad but the biggest thing is his ability. There are certain games we will benefit from him.
“We have asked a lot of Paul Paton and John Rankin and they have been excellent for us but Morgaro’s addition will give us options in case of injuries and suspensions and not have to rely on the same two every week.
“But also he can play alongside those two guys, so he’s a good addition.
The manager added: “I knew him before and his ability was never in question.
“When he came in I wasn’t looking to sign him. He just came in to get fit by training with the lads, the same as Prince Buaben, who has been in a couple of weeks but there’s nothing happening there.
“But it’s worked out really well that Morgaro is joining up. I’d like to thank the board because they have really backed me.
“Like most clubs, the budget was set and it was used but the chairman has allowed me to bring in Mark Wilson and a few others and he’s also let me to bring in Morgaro.
“It was great to get that backing to bring him in because we have a lot of good youngsters at this club. Morgaro has won a trophy during his time here and it’s always nice to bring in someone with experience of lifting silverware.”
