Dundee United new boy aims to add to Good cup experience

United new boy Curtis Good believes the Tangerines have the potential to go all the way in this seasons William Hill Scottish Cup.
United new boy Curtis Good believes the Tangerines have the potential to go all the way in this seasons William Hill Scottish Cup.

He has played at Wembley in one major cup final now Curtis Good is hoping to go all the way in the Scottish Cup with Dundee United.

The 20-year-old Australian joined the Tangerines on transfer deadline day last week on loan from parent club Newcastle and was thrown straight into the thick of the action against Partick Thistle at Firhill.

It was while he was farmed out at Bradford last season that he helped the Bantams reach the Capital One Cup Final against Premier League outfit Swansea.

Bradford had knocked out Wigan, Arsenal and Aston Villa en route to the showpiece occasion at Wembley. However, they found the Welsh side too strong on the day and slumped to a 5-0 defeat.

Despite that, Good insists it was an experience he will never forget.

He said: “I got to the final of the cup with Bradford last year. That was a really good experience. Cup runs can be awesome for any club. Looking back, it was a very exciting occasion.

“We had a home and away game against Aston Villa, which we won to get to the final.

“I played at Wembley in the final at left-back. It wasn’t the best game for us as we got beaten 5-0. We lost a goal early and it got kind of worse after that, which was a bit unfortunate, to be honest.

“The team pulled together for that season so I know what it takes to get a cup run. I loved every second of it.

“The fans were brilliant too. OK, it wasn’t a great performance in the final but the fans were still there chanting at the end.

“They stuck by us and it was a pretty big thing for a club our size to get to a major final. At first, we were really disappointed with the outcome but, in the days that followed, we knew it was a pretty big achievement just to get there.

“As a player, you always want to win and you don’t want to lose 5-0 so there were mixed emotions.”

Having settled in at United, Good believes that the club have a high calibre of players more than capable of going all the way to the Scottish Cup final and repeating the heroics of the 2010 trophy-winning team.

He added: “There is enough talent at this club for us to go on a run. I can see that when I look around. It looks promising. I’ve never had a problem settling in anywhere and having so many good young players helps.

“I was looking at some of their results before I came up and there’s obviously a lot of talent at this club.”

“From a personal point of view, it would be brilliant for someone as young as myself to say that I have played in two cup finals one north and south of the border.

“We’ll need to wait and see but we’ll just give it everything. It’s a massive game in the cup on Sunday against St Mirren. I’m looking forward to it.

“I’ve not had any banter or text messages with Conor Newton (on loan to Saints from Newcastle) yet but I’ll be expecting some as the game approaches.

“I definitely hope to get a sustained run in the Dundee United first team, which could then help me stake a claim when I go back to Newcastle.

“As you know, it’s hard to get opportunities at Newcastle.

“I want to play as many games as I can between now and the end of the season and make as big an impression as possible.”
