St Johnstone v Kilmarnock: Millar aims to make Connolly’s McDiarmid return an unhappy one

Chris Millar.
Chris Millar.

It’s safe to say Mark Connolly won’t look back on his St Johnstone career with much pride or affection.

The centre-back arrived in Perth on loan from Bolton Wanderers at the start of 2010 with a £1m price tag around his neck, and sunk without trace.

Well, not quite without trace. There was one game of first team football at Hamilton, which brought with it a booking and a withdrawal from the action at half-time.

The Irishman certainly won’t be troubling the Saints Hall of Fame on the back of it, though.

One of his team-mates back then was Chris Millar.

And the midfielder hopes that Connolly, now a Kilmarnock player, won’t be taking away any happier memories from his return to Perth.

“When Mark came in he maybe had a bit of ego,” Millar recalled.

“Not knowing the Scottish game he might have thought he would walk straight into the team.

“But we had a lot of experienced players at the time. There were guys like Jody (Morris) and Dubes (Michael Duberry).

“In our dressing room you need to work hard. Maybe his attitude wasn’t as good as it should have been.

“Sometimes that can happen when you’re a young boy though. You think you’re invincible sometimes when you’re young.

“There was a bit of naivety. He maybe thought ‘I’m better than this’.

“Fair play to him though. He’s obviously gone away and re-focused and he’s flying with Kilmarnock.

“That says a lot for him. “There was no doubting his ability. He’s got a great range of passing and he was good in the air.

“I saw him on the TV against Dundee United and he was very good.

“He’ll feel like he’s got a point to prove on Saturday. Disappointments spur you on.

“I know what I was like when I played against Celtic after they released me. He’ll have an added incentive against us.

“Hopefully he doesn’t enjoy it too much back in Perth on Saturday though!”

Millar is hoping to make a return of his own, after missing the last two matches with a groin strain.

“It’s been a frustrating injury,” the former Morton man admitted.

“I pulled out of the United game when I felt my groin tighten and then I was back in training for the St Mirren match.

“But then I felt the other side of the groin, so I missed that one as well.

“Anytime I get a niggle it seems to be the groin. I don’t want to say I’m injury prone, but it’s something I’ve got to manage.

“I think my form has been OK. I don’t want to big myself up but I do feel I’ve started the season well, and it’s maybe even the best form of my career.

“That’s makes it even more frustrating because you want to keep it going. I’m itching to get back in.”

Today could be the first time Saints start a match with their new look strike-force of Brian Graham and James McFadden.

Millar has high hopes for the partnership.

He explained: “I said when Brian came in that he would always take chances.

“He’s started really well, and that’s been a real positive for us.

“At times we’ve starved him of service. In a couple of the games it was one chance, one goal.

“We need to get good service into him and Faddy. They linked up really well in a friendly we had.”

Millar added: “We’re being punished for every mistake we make just now. The next two weeks is really big for us.

“We’ve got league games we’re looking to win and then there’s the semi-final against Rangers. A few victories and the whole outlook is different.

“The last break came at the wrong time for us, but this time it’s different. We’ve been able to re-group and re-focus.”

Millar and Scott Brown could both be in the squad, but Adam Morgan is suspended as a result of a red card in a development league match.
