Tommy Wright has brought in two experienced strikers over the summer to try and solve St Johnstone’s goal-scoring problem.
But David Wotherspoon needs no reminding that the Perth club’s midfielders will also have to do their bit.
Liam Craig’s return should help Saints in their efforts to improve on last season’s meagre tally that left them as the Premiership’s second lowest scorers.
And Wotherspoon is confident that he can chip in as well.
“Getting goals is a massive target for me,” the pointed out. “I have said it before but hopefully this is the season when it all comes together.
“I want to get goals for the team. We have to add goals from midfield. We didn’t contribute enough last season.
“I feel I get into the right positions so hopefully they will start going in.
“I get goals in training every day and I genuinely believe it can be part of my game.
“I know myself I can do it. The goals will come. I have got goals at other levels and when I was younger. It hasn’t seemed to work out for me in the last few years. I have to get myself forward and be in a position to take the chances.
“With Liam coming back we should get more goals from the middle of the park. He is a great addition. He scored a few at Hibs and plenty here last time round. But I want to weigh in as well.
“His set pieces are great with that left foot. We won’t be fighting over the free-kicks. He can take them from one side and I will hopefully be taking them from the other side of the park.”
When Wotherspoon injured his ankle before the second leg against Alashkert, getting back to fitness in time for the league opener at Hearts was in doubt.
But the former Hibs man will be available for selection at a stadium he loves to play in.
He said: “I’m fit and ready for Hearts. I was taking it one day at a time and hoping I was going to make Tynecastle. There’s still a bit of bone bruising there but it was good getting game time against Blackpool after missing the second leg in Europe.
“This is one I didn’t want to miss. I want to hit the ground running.
“I’m not sure whether Liam or myself will get more stick from the Hearts fans because of our Hibs connections. But I am looking forward to playing again at Tynecastle. “There’s sure to be a great atmosphere and the fans are right on top of you.
“Everyone else will see it as Hearts big day but we will just focus on St Johnstone. They are back in the top flight so it is a big day for their fans. They will be buzzing. But we are hoping to go there and get a win. We are going there determined to spoil the party.”
Wotherspoon can draw on happy memories at Tynecastle both as a Hibs and Saints player.
“I have won there when Ross Caldwell scored a late goal for Hibs and I have won there with St Johnstone,” he said.
“Our last visit there wasn’t too good, losing to Aberdeen in the League Cup semi-final. But we have a decent record there against Hearts.
“We have sometimes been slow starters so it would be nice to get a win on day one. We are aiming for top six again and we want to get off to a good dstart. A win at Tynecastle would put down a marker.”
