A week of good news for the club ended on a disappointing note when Glenrothes were toppled from top spot in BT Caledonia Division One.
Their match against Gordonians was among the many fixtures that failed to beat the freeze which decimated the weekend fixture card.
One of the club’s founder members, Ken Campbell, had his unstinting efforts in support of the club recognised when he was named Scottish Rugby BT Volunteer of the Month for December.
Campbell was one of the club’s 26 original members when the club was formed 50 years ago and he was aged 19.
After serving as a player, referee, president and secretary of the club, he is now the house convener.
The players had hoped to celebrate the award with a win that would have kept them in pole position.
With Carleton Park unplayable, club officials had aimed to call on the support of neighbours Waid Academy.
However, the Anstruther side’s pitch was also frozen.
That meant that a comfortable win for Orkney against bottom side Ellon in the only match that beat the weather was enough for the islanders to displace Glenrothes at the summit.
There was a similar picture in Division 2 where the highly anticipated top-of-the-table clash between Harris Academy and Alloa at Elliott Road was among the victims of the weather.
The sole survivor was at Stirling University where the students shrugged off the chilly conditions with a brisk performance that secured a 91-15 win over Panmure.
Arbroath surrendered their unbeaten record in Division 3 against an inspired Crieff & Strathearn side who turned on the heat to chalk up a 37-24 success.
However, the damage to Arbroath’s title challenge was limited when nearest challengers Grangemouth seconds took only a narrow defeat bonus point from a 15-12 loss at home to Kirkcaldy seconds.
Their victory has moved them to within striking distance of Grangemouth in the league.
At the other end of the table, Waid Academy were awarded a 28-0 win after opponents Bannockburn were unable to field a team.
It was the same story in Division 4, where Glenrothes Development side were credited with a 28-0 win over Hillfoots seconds who had a player shortage.
It was the second successive week of inactivity for the Fifers, who were handed a similar result the previous Saturday.
The decision leaves the Fifers at the top of the table three points clear of Stobswell who have a game in hand Glenrothes coach Tom Hainey pointed out that winning games by default was of little satisfaction to his men, who are desperate to play.
“It won’t console a big squad desperate for competitive action”, he said. “Hopefully next week will see the boys kick off 2015 at last.”
Stobswell did have a chance to play when they travelled to face Alloa seconds and, in difficult conditions, they shared the spoils in a 19-19 draw.
