Gregor Townsend fears Glasgow’s quest for Pro12 glory could be washed away by the woeful weather.

The last two Warriors home matches have fallen victim to the elements, which have left Scotstoun sodden.

But the coach believes his side’s chances of claiming a place in the play-off phase had already been dented by the abnormally wet autumn.

Townsend declares: “We have performed very well defensively this season. Last season, we had been good in attack as well.

“There is quite a long list of reasons why we have not been producing the type of rugby that we did a year ago.

“One of them is the weather conditions.

“You have to play a different game and we have not been winning enough ball. Our line out hasn’t functioned either.

“And when we have been claiming possession, we have not been accurate enough when he had opportunities,

“We just know we have not hit our top game yet.”

In the wake of the latest big-match postponement at short notice, Townsend proclaimed himself a big fan of the latest forms of artificial turf.

He said: “The pitch looks and plays better than last season, but we’ve now had two games off and that’s not good for us, our plans and our supporters.

“I’m a big believer in 3G. We played on a 3G pitch this year at Cardiff.

“We enjoyed playing on it and I believe that we will see more and more of those pitches in the future.

“We could play all our games when we’re meant to play them.

“It is something I’d be happy to play and coach on. I see benefits not just for the games but also training during the week.

“We all wanted to play on New Year’s Day but unfortunately the weather beat us.

“The pitch inspection was planned for 5pm and he said there was potential for putting it back half an hour if the rain cleared.

“One forecast that came in said it was going to clear around 6pm, but by the time the ref looked at it at 5pm he said he’d have to call it off.

“We understand that it was a big hassle for fans, but we were all hoping that we could play.”
