Kris Miller, Courier, 18/05/15. Picture today shows the oil rig at Dundee docks/Forth ports viewed down Lunan Terrace. Nearby residents have been complaining of noise from work and sirens late into the night while the platform is being worked on.

Residents of Craigiebank say they are being kept awake by the drone of an oil rig foghorn.

They say children are being kept awake by the racket, and the sound is audible even with windows closed.

The Ensco 100 rig is in Dundee Port for work which takes place around the clock.Forth Ports, who operate Dundee Port, have said noise is kept to aminimum at night.

Craigiebank resident Kim Ogilvie said: “I’m happy there is work and I hope that it stays but, living so close, you can hear the Tannoy and you can hear when alarms go off late at night.

“It’s definitely the rigs because it’s really quiet when there isn’t a rig in port.I don’t know if the sound echoes up the streets but it is surprisingly loud. You can even hear the engines in the cranes as they move sometimes.

“You get used to it sometimes the rigs are there for months on end especially in the summer when you have to have windows open.

“I’m all for work, just perhapsthey could have more effective noise restrictions at night.”

Patricia McIntosh said: “While I totally agree that we should welcome the work, I timed the noise and it went off nearly every minute. Why would it be repeatedly set off?”

Another resident, who did not wish to be named, said she had been repeatedly woken by the foghorn in the earlyhours.

She said: “It woke my 3-year-old son up in his bed at 2am. He was really scared because he doesn’t know.I can understand testing it orsounding it for whatever reason, but at that time in the morning?

“There is no respect in the way they conduct themselves.I know it’s a dock area but it is also a residential area, and there haven’t been problems like this before.”

A council spokesman said they had not yet received a noise complaint regarding the oil rig.

A spokesman from the Port of Dundee said: “The Port of Dundee is unaware of the horn of the Ensco 100 being sounded in the early hours of the morning over the weekend.

“The rig and its management team are fully aware of the protocols in place around rigs berthed at the port, and the port will continue to liaise with the rig to ensure no sounding of the rig horn after 7pm at night.”
