Dundee photographer’s images of city put him in running for award

A Dundee photographer has had six of his works shortlisted for the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year award.

Shahbaz Majeed, 33, is self-taught and spent hours every day honing his craft at the Dundee Photographic Society, of which he is now vice-president.

He said: “I won previously as part of the UK Landscape Photographer of the Year, in 2011, which was a huge achievement.

“You never know whether you’re going to be successful but it’s a great honour to be nominated.”

He spoke about how he captures his images of Dundee.

“I always aim to make people feel proud of their bonnie home town,” he said.

“It’s about getting rid of clichs, and the emotional connection is difficult to make; knowing how to capture the city without manipulating the image, that’s the key.

“I think what I’m doing is part of a wider movement.

“A lot of people are doing long exposures, multiple exposures through HDR photography; I’ve seen many ‘light paintings’ as well. It’s a new kind of photo-graphy, people are exploring what can be done with all these techniques.

“And it’s about using those techniques with the landscapes and spirit of Dundee. I think as a city reinventing itself these photographs me and others take are deeply important, looking at the city in a new way and taking our place next to the great new design, like Hayley Scanlan’s clothing, it’s the same spirit.

“That’s why these photos are in demand, the media, the advertisers, the companies and people want to see their city in a new light.”

The Dundee photographer admits he couldn’t do it without his ‘extremely patient’ wife, Shazia.

“She’s so patient. On a drive to Glasgow I’ll take the scenic route, which is three hours longer, or I’ll stop to take a photo and be gone for hours. She never says a word.”

Mr Majeed will run training sessions in February, as well as training he does via his Frame Focus Photography website.
