Facebook shock for Tay bridge board staff

The Tay Road Bridge Joint Board building is on the land put up for sale.

Dundee employees were left shocked when they learned of council plans to sell the land out from under them on Facebook.

News that council-owned land in City Quay was going up for sale reached staff at the Tay Bridge Joint Board Office, which occupies the site, this week.

Chairwoman of the board Councillor Maggie Taylor said she was “very angry” about the situation as she had not been informed either.

She said: “We have 20-odd staff and we haven’t been informed. It has made me very angry.

“Apparently it appeared on Facebook, which is not how you want staff to find out. I didn’t know anything about it.”

The land makes up part of the central waterfront site being offered up to developers. However, the brief for Plot 18, the eastern area next to the river where the Tay Bridge offices are sited, says developers must provide “new accommodation for the existing Tay Road Bridge management office” somewhere within the development site.

Dundee City Council has insisted employees had been kept informed, but Councillor Taylor disputes this.

She said: “I found out myself from our clerk not all that long ago after lots of discussions have taken place that the board has not been part of.”

The Dundee Central Waterfront Masterplan was published in 2001, but updates are produced periodically.

A spokesman for Dundee City Council said: “We welcome the interest in developing this plot of land, which is currently the site of the Tay Road Bridge Joint Board offices.

“Any proposed development on this site can only go forward with the approval of the board.

“The board will also be closely involved in any discussions regarding its operational requirements to make sure that the needs of bridge users, staff and partners are taken into account during the process.”
