Auctioneer Steven Dewar with one of the Oor Wullie annuals up for sale.

A first edition Oor Wullie annual produced in 1940 is to go to auction in Dundee.

The historic volume is among lots which include a whole collection of Oor Wullie and Broons annuals printed between 1943 and 1957 which will be up for sale by Curr & Dewar auctioneers.

A date and location for the auction is yet to be announced.

The 1940 annual is expected to fetch at least £3,000 at the auction.

Steven Dewar, a director at Curr & Dewar, said: “A local chap had seen something on the news a year or so ago about a similar comic selling for a lot of money.

“He thought that he’d seen a comic like that somewhere in his house and he found it in the loft. The same issue sold for £3,400 in December and another sold for £4,400 in November 2014.

“We are hoping this one will sell for a similar amount at least £3,000, but more if we are lucky.”

He added: “I don’t know how many of these comics are still in existence so it was quite exciting to have one brought in to us.

“The guy who brought it in had the next five issues too.

“It’s great because Oor Wullie is iconic and we’re hoping there will be a lot of interest.”

In 2014, a first edition Oor Wullie was auctioned off for £5,400 in Glasgow.

The rare comic book was discovered in a pile of books when the owners were clearing out the attic of their relative’s Edinburgh home.

They only realised the first edition annual was a collectible when they spotted the date on the front cover.

Drawn by artist Dudley D Watkins, Wullie made his debut in the “fun section” of the Sunday Post newspaper in March 1936, with the first Christmas annual released in 1940.
