Local company comes to the aid of crestfallen family after plaque stolen from Dundee cemetery

A local signage firm has come to the aid of a man left crestfallen after vandals stole a plaque dedicated to his infant brother.

A tribute to Rob’s Stephen’s brother, William, who died after just 23 hours, was torn from a bench in Balgay Cemetery late last year.

Mr Stephen organised for the plaque to be attached to a memorial bench in the city cemetery in an effort to ease years of pain for his elderly mother.

The 62-year-old had travelled to Dundee from his home in Wales to visit the plaque for the first time, but quickly discovered that the plaque had been torn from the bench and replaced with a bizarre tribute to someone else.

Now, boss of Icon Signs, John Ferrie, has made good on a promise to make a new sign for William.

Commenting on the act of kindness, Mr Stephen said: “I’m extremely happy with what he’s done and I telephoned him earlier to thank him for his generosityit’s restored my faith in human nature.

“It’s just such a nice thing to do. I don’t know what to say, it’s really fantastic.

“I wasn’t expecting anything like this.

“I was disappointed with what happened and I think with me having connections with Dundee, it made it a bit worse.

“But this is a lovely gesture and it’s certainly helped restore my faith in human nature.”

Speaking after learning of the heartless act of vandalism, Mr Ferrie said: “What happened was pretty disgraceful. As soon as I read what had happened I decided that we would get it sorted.”
