Mystery surrounds the discovery of a gun pulled from the Tay at City Quay.

Members of the public spotted objects in the mud in the river during low tide on Tuesday and police were called in to retrieve what is understood to be at least one firearm.

It is understood police are not connecting the find to any crime at present.

Darren Mayberry, resident at City Quay, said he was unperturbed by the police’s find.

He said: “I’m not that concerned to be honest.

“The gun had probably been in the water for a while so I would have thought no one would be able to use it anyway.

“I was walking to work at the time of the incident and it is reassuring to see the police are on top of things.

“It would be interesting to see how it came to be there though.”

Resident Victoria Nye said: “I’m glad it isn’t a new weapon that could have been found and used. It’ll be interesting if we find out how it came to be there.

“It’s very odd though. I walk along there every day, sometimes at low tide, and haven’t seen anything in the mud.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Police Scotland attended in Marine Parade Walk, Dundee, at about 11.40am this morning following a report that items had been seen off the shoreline.

“Officers attended and the items are being examined and the matter is under inquiry.”
