Parking charge firm bills City Quay resident for £18,500

Carly Mackie says she will fight the company's attempts to charge her for parking outside her own home.
Carly Mackie says she will fight the company's attempts to charge her for parking outside her own home.

A Dundee woman has been issued with a mammoth £18,500 parking charge for parking on her own driveway.

Carly Mackie, of West Victoria Dock Road, claims her car is targeted as it sits outside the garage belonging to the house.

Private parking penalty notices have been appearing on her car almost every day.

She has also received countless letters and phone calls demanding payment.

Things came to a head when she received a letter claiming she owed the firm, Vehicle Control Services Ltd, based in Sheffield, more than £18,500.

She said: “It’s been going on for years now, they seem to be targeting my car.I asked the man issuing the tickets where I could park, and he didn’t have an answer for me.

“To try to make it stop we inquired how much it would cost to simply rent the space, and were told it would cost £40 per month.

“We have a right to park in front of our own property.I’ve considered moving out, it just makes my life so hellish.

“Other cars have parked in the same place I have and have not been issued a ticket.

“They say the route is pedestrian access, but there are old cobbles that wouldn’t be suitable for a wheelchair, and just across the road is a smooth path.

“I always make a point of parking in front of my own garage, where nobody elsecould park, and neverparking on the double yellow lines on the road.

“One day I returned to find a council parking notice on it, as well as a private ticket, which made no sense, how can I have violated both a public andprivate parking at the same time?”

Ms Mackiesuccessfully appealed the council parking charge and did not have to pay it.

She lives with her mother and stepfather in a flat in the development andthe family have indicated they intend to fight the charges.

The case issimilar to that of pensioner James Reilly, who accrued £20,000 ofparking fines only a few hundred yards away by parking on Marine Parade Walk.

Vehicle Control Services Ltd later responded to our request comment.

A spokesmansaid they are contracted to patrol the City Quay site.

“The terms andconditions are clearlydisplayed on prominent signs around the site,” he said.

“Ms Mackie hasconstantly breached the terms and conditions of this contract by repeatedlyparking in a restricted area/parking without displaying a valid permit.

“As such, a parking charge notice was affixed to her vehicle on each relevant occasion. “Ms Mackie has also had the option to appeal each and every parking charge notice directly to us but failed to do so.”

Ms Mackie intends to fight the charge notice if it does go to court.
