A man suffered serious burns after he was engulfed by a fireball in a quiet Dundee suburb.

Residents of Laird Street in the city’s Downfield area spoke of their shock after the man was seriously injured.

They saw the man lying on the street suffering from burns to his face, hands and body beside a car and a petrol canister.

Once the victim had received treatment and had been removed by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital, police forensic officers combed a section of the street in an effort to gather evidence of what had happened.

At the centre of their investigations was a silver Ford Focus and a petrol can beside the vehicle on the pavement.

The officers carried out a fingertip search and various items, including pieces of charred clothing, were bagged up and removed from the scene.

Uniformed officers kept people away from the car and the area of the search.

Scottish Fire and Rescue said they were called to the bottom part of Laird Street shortly before 6pm after reports of a car on fire.

They said the vehicle had been extinguished before their arrival but beyond that were referring all inquiries about the incident to the police.

“We are dealing with an incident in which a male sustained injury,” Police Scotland confirmed.

“Inquiries are continuing.”

They confirmed that the man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being rushed to Ninewells where he is detained, though his condition is unknown.

Apprentice engineer Connor Kennedy, 18, from Dundee was on Laird Street visiting his grandmother when he heard noise from the street.

“I came out of the house to see what had happened,” he said.

“A man was lying on the road, his face was badly burned, it was black. He couldn’t move his hands or arms, it was horrible.”

One Laird Street resident, who did not wish to be named, said he had been told that the man had to be pulled from the car while still alight, but he did not actually witness this himself.

“It is shocking, this is such a quiet street,” said the man.
