Temperatures rise as Christmas shoppers suffer gridlock trying to exit Dundee car park

Cars had to wait up to 45 minutes to get out of the car park.

Festive fury has gripped motorists battling to leave a busy Dundee city centre car park.

Christmas shoppers have complained of huge queues at the Gallagher Retail Park on Dock Street.

One driver said it had taken him 45 minutes to leave the car park on Monday.

The man described the situation at 6pm as “chaos” and said there are no wardens directing the traffic, as there was last year.

Gallagher Retail Park managing agents Cushman & Wakefield (C&W) said Monday was unexpectedly busy and the wardens only work Tuesday to Sunday.

Spokeswoman Kate Bruce said: “We have had wardens in place since the beginning of December.

“There are four traffic marshals at the park every day.

Monday was a really busy shopping day, much more than Saturday.

“The traffic just caught everyone unawares.

“It was the first day we’ve had feedback that the car park was busy.”

She said the wardens will be on through the rest of the festive period.

Another shopper said: “That car park is a bit of a nightmare at the best of times but on busy shopping days it really is utterly horrific.

“This is a prime shopping location for the city and to have it gummed up with so much traffic is frustrating to say the least.

“Having to wait over half an hour really is a bit of a joke and it is something they desperately need to address.

“I think if they put in another exit up at the top next to the bus depot traffic would move around a lot more quickly and the delays would be dramatically reduced.”
