Cancer survivors from across Fife and Edinburgh opened Cancer Research UK’s Relay for Life in Dalgety Bay on Saturday by taking part in an emotional lap of honour.

Some 69 men and women wearing special T-shirts bearing the word ‘Survivor’ stepped forward onto the track at Dalgety Bay Sports and Leisure Centre as their names were called.

Members of the public were invited to watch the ceremony before joining in the fun and entertainment at the inspirational community event which took place over the weekend.

Following the opening ceremony, members of the 24 teams taking part crowded onto the pitch. Each team consisted of between eight and 15 people.Picture gallery:Dalgety Bay Relay for LifeTeam-mates took it in turn to run or walk around the track, making sure there was at least one member on the track at all times.

Fundraising manager Sarah Johnston said: “It’s a day of hope.”

As the 24-hour relay was non-stop through the night, those team members not on the track could take turns to rest, eat, or sleep in tents set up close by.

The highlight of the event was the Candle of Hope ceremony, held at dusk.
