Five workers were detained after the raid at the Royal Bengal Tandoori restaurant in Dunfermline.

Officers have detained five illegal workers after a raid on a restaurant in Dunfermline.

They were caught during immigration enforcement action on the Royal Bengal Tandoori on Pittencrieff Street.

Officers spoke to staff at the business where the owner could face a £100,000 fine to establish if they had the right to live and work in the UK.

As a result, five Bangladeshi men, aged between 29 and 66, were arrested for immigration offences.

They have all been detained while steps are taken to remove them from the country.

The business owner will be issued with a notice warning that a financial penalty of up to £20,000 per illegal worker found will be imposed unless they can demonstrate that appropriate right to work checks were carried out.

Stephen Roarty, from Home Office Immigration Enforcement, said: “As this operation demonstrates, we are working hard to clamp down on those who abuse the UK’s immigration system. Using illegal labour is not a victimless crime.

“It cheats the taxpayer, undercuts businesses who ply an honest trade and deprives legitimate job seekers of employment opportunities. Those who choose to ignore the rules will face the consequences.”
