Sheku Bayoh's mother, right, was joined by friends and family at a gathering in Kirkcaldy on Wednesday night.

The family of a man who died in police custody will speak out today as an inquiry into his death continues.

Sheku Bayoh, 31, was detained following an incident in Kirkcaldy on May 3.

The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) is examining the circumstances of his death in custody a short time later.

Mr Bayoh’s partner Colette is expected to attend a conference hosted by solicitor Aamer Anwar in Edinburgh today.

Family members will then meet the lord advocate, who instructed PIRC to look at the case, Mr Anwar said.

The police watchdog last week appealed for information from anyone who was in Hayfield Road, Kirkcaldy, between 7am and 8am on the day of the incident, when a female police officer was injured.

PIRC said a report on its findings will be submitted to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service in due course.

Mr Bayoh, who worked for British Gas, was father to four-month old Isaac and Tyler, his three-year-old son by a previous partner.
