Housing plans mean £3.3 million expansion of Errol Primary School

A Perthshire primary school is in line for a £3.3 million expansion.

Plans have been tabled to provide new classroom accommodation at Errol, boosting the school roll by more than 100.

Perth and Kinross Council said the extension is urgently needed to cope with demand from new housing being built in the school’s catchment area.

The local authority hopes to increase capacity from 217 primary pupils to 316, and from 30 nursery children to 50.

New services for 10 pre-school children under three-years-old and an additional support needs unit are also required.

A derelict bus garage to the north-east of the Station Road school has been bought by the council to make room for the extension.

The school, a B-listed building dating from 1897, has recently undergone a major refurbishment. According to a design statement prepared by the council, the new-look school replaced an “incoherent assortment of buildings and prefabricated huts” and creates a welcoming and “non-institutional” atmosphere.

A spokesman said: “Housing development within the school catchment area has resulted in the requirement to increase the capacity of the school.”

He said the proposed extension would replicate the design approach established by the previous extension.

“It is proposed that the central break-out spine of the building is extended to the north-east with three additional early years classrooms, the nursery and ancillary spaces extending off either side,” he said.

The additional support needs unit will be created inside the school’s old nursery.

A survey of the bus station has found that there are no bats roosting inside, and no suggestion of other protected species.

Parents and other members of the public will be able to have their say on the plan in the coming weeks and the consultation is likely to run until the end of next month.
