A caller persuaded an elderly man to hand over a bank document at the door of his Perthshire home, police have revealed.

On Monday or Tuesday a man called at the home of the 94-year-old in Methven and asked for a copy of his most recent bank statement.

The resident handed over the statement when the suspect said he had to take it away to photocopy it.

The caller, who did not return, is described as being 50 to 60 years old, of slim build with short, dark hair. He was wearing casual navy clothing and spoke with a local accent.

It is understood that no money was taken from the victim’s account.

A police spokesman said “People should always be extremely cautious about providing personal and financial information to anyone, particularly in instances where they have been cold-called. Be suspicious of anyone arriving unannounced at your door.

“Householders should ensure that doors are secure, even when at home, and use a door chain.

“Do not let anyone in until you are certain of who they are, or who they claim to represent.

“Neighbours should look out for one another, particularly if they have elderly or vulnerable neighbours. Report any suspicious activity to the police.”

Anyone who recognises the description is asked to call the police on 101 or, alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
