Abertay University’s winter graduation saw around 350 students awarded degrees at the Caird Hall, in Dundee.

Degrees were conferred by Abertay’s Chancellor, Lord Cullen of Whitekirk, in subjects as diverse as biomedical science, ethical hacking and food and drink innovation.

An Honorary Doctorate in Liberal Arts was awarded to Stephen Wordsworth, a former senior diplomat and now executive director of the Council for At-Risk Academics.

He said: “I’m very honoured and very delighted to be accepting this degree on behalf of the charity.

“It’s been a very busy time for the charity, mainly because of events in the Middle East, with Syrian academics and Iraqi academics fleeing for their safety or the safety of their families, they aren’t refugees in the classic sense but they don’t know when they’ll be able to return.

“But it isn’t just the Middle East, also academics from around the world who are gay who have to flee because laws in their own countries make it unsafe.

“This is my first honorary doctorate, but the chairperson of our organisation received a doctorate in the summer so it’s a great support to the work of the charity.”

Congratulating the new graduates on their success, Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Nigel Seaton said at the ceremony: “Of course, an Abertay education is not just a preparation for the world of work. It is a preparation for life, and I know that your experience at Abertay will equip you for voluntary work, public service and a whole range of contributions to the wider community.”
