Edinburgh remembering Mikaeel Kular a year after tragic discovery

A minute’s silence will be held in memory of tragic Mikaeel Kular a year after his body was discovered.

The Edinburgh community who joined forces to help in the search for the three-year-old has been asked to gather at a park in the Muirhouse area of the city on Saturday, when candles will be lit.

However, there will be no formal remembrance for the youngster in Kirkcaldy, where his body was discovered in woods on January 17 days after he was killed by his mother Rosdeep Adekoya.

The community in the Fife town where Rosdeep grew up and where her family still lives has maintained a dignified silence since the horrific events of last year.

While some families who know the Kulars may choose to mark his passing in their own way, there will not be a public event.

Kirkcaldy MSP David Torrance said that following the intense police action and media attention of last year, local people are focusing on getting back to normal.

“I think they are putting it behind them and quietly getting on with their lives,” he said.

“It was a tragic thing that happened but we are lucky in this area that incidents like that are very few and far between.”

Local councillor Susan Leslie agreed, adding: “The whole situation last year was focused very much in Edinburgh where the family was living and where the community turned out to search for the little boy.

“When events moved to here, the community woke up to what was a tragedy, a tragedy for a family they had known.

“Their response was a dignified and respectful silence to that tragedy.”

Mrs Leslie said she believed the community would continue to behave in an appropriately respectful way.

“That’s not to say that some families who perhaps had a closer connection might not mark it in their own particular way but there won’t be any public ceremony,” she said.

Mikaeel was reported missing from his family home in Edinburgh by his mum on January 15, prompting a huge search by police and members of the public. His body was discovered two days later in woods behind his aunt’s house in Kirkcaldy.

Rosdeep admitted the culpable homicide of her son and was jailed for 11 years.
