Two men have been arrested after two police officers were injured in a disturbance at a football match.

Police were called to the scene at Cappielow Park stadium in Greenock at around 9.45pm on Tuesday following a report of a disturbance during the Morton v Motherwell match.

A female officer who was injured was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley. She was treated for a hand injury then later released.

The other injured officer, a man, suffered a back injury but did not require medical treatment.

Police are appealing for information about the incident, which happened in the “wee Dublin end”, the away support section behind one of the goals.

Chief Inspector Elliot Brown said: “Around 9.45pm on Tuesday 22 September 2015, police were called to a report of a disturbance within the ‘wee Dublin end’ of Cappielow Park in Greenock during the Morton v Motherwell football match.

“Additional officers attended and assisted, and two officers received minor injuries.

“Inquiries are continuing today to find out the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and I would ask anyone with information or footage that will help officers establish what happened to contact Police Scotland on 101.

“We take incidents of this nature extremely seriously. We are fully investigating and pursuing all lines of inquiry to find out exactly what happened and how these officers were injured.

“The safety of everyone attending football matches – including our officers – is a priority for us and violence and disorder will not be tolerated.”

Police said the two men arrested in connection with the disturbance are being reported to the procurator fiscal.

Morton won the game 3-2 in the League Cup match.
