TripAdvisor’s most caustic reviewers say Courier country attractions are nothing to write home about

There's not much to catch the eye in the Angus glens.
There's not much to catch the eye in the Angus glens.

They are among the most prominent landmarks in Courier Country, visited by thousands each year.

But some tourists are not as taken with East Scotland’s attractions as you might think, according to the website TripAdvisor.

One visitor has described the historic Swilcan Bridge in St Andrews as “just a bridge”, while another described Dundee’s largest hill, The Law, as “difficult to find”.

Meanwhile, a hiker said that the landscape of the Angus glens “could be better” and a swimmer was left dissatisfied with the new Olympia swimming pool in Dundee, claiming it is “literally the size of my living room”.

The visitors’ comments are just some of the thousands rating various attractions in Courier Country on the popular user review website.

Despite a clique of critics being left unimpressed, scores of the area’s premier sites have received a ‘Certificate of Excellence’ from the popular website.

Overall, the Discovery tops the list of Dundee attractions, achieving more than 350 “excellent” ratings from just over 500 reviews.

That’s compared to the three out of five, or “average”, that the Olympia received.

In Fife, the famous Swilcan Bridge has been rated the Kingdom’s favourite attraction, closely followed by the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace museum in Dunfermline.

In contrast, Deep Sea World in North Queensferry received a three out of five rating, causing it to be ranked 54th out of the 71 attractions listed in Fife.

Despite its Shakespearian associations, Glamis Castle tops the table in Angus, scoring a four and a half rating after 441 reviews.

Kerr’s Minature Railway in Arbroath has chugged its way into second place, while the Angus Glens lie third.

Birds are the greatest attraction in Perthshire, with Phoenix Falconry in Blackford reaching the No 1 spot.

Other top 10 attractions in the area include the Blackwatch Castle and Museum, as well as the Library of Innerpeffray.

In total, almost 27,000 people from all over the world have posted reviews of Courier Country attractions on TripAdvisor, while thousands more have also taken the time to review restaurants, hotels and holiday rentals.
