Enjoy Ciftci while he’s here

Nadir Ciftci shows some love. Is he getting it back from United fans?
Nadir Ciftci shows some love. Is he getting it back from United fans?

Perhaps the time is right for Dundee United fans to remind themselves just how much they love Nadir Ciftci.

The big striker wasn’t the most popular player at Tannadice on Saturday as the Tangerines beat Kilmarnock 3-1 and there was a good reason for that.

He was, let’s be blunt here, greedy.

He shot when he should have passed and held on to the ball too long when better options were available.

So he isn’t perfect.

What he is, however, is a hugely entertaining and talented footballer.

Has there been a more magical moment for United fans since their 2010 Scottish Cup win than the Turk’s premature celebration at Ibrox last season?

A player who will raise his arms and scream at the top of his voice before he has even put the ball into the net is a rarity indeed.

The big man was box office then and he remains so now.

OK, so he frustrates fans and fellow players with his wrong decisions and selfish play but his skill, creativity and downright character outweigh all that for me.

It’s just a pity, rather frustratingly, that he is suspended for Saturday’s Scottish Cup tie at Motherwell because United will miss him.

As manager Jackie McNamara admitted, if Ciftci could iron out all the creases in his game then he wouldn’t even be at the club.

Let’s enjoy watching the guy – foibles and all – while he is here.
