Dunfermline have set a deadline of Sunday for applications to become their new manager, with Queen’s Park boss Gus MacPherson being installed as the bookmakers’ favourite.

The Pars removed John Potter from the post and returned him to a coaching role on Thursday after conducting a thorough review into a bitterly disappointing season that saw them finish seventh and well out of the running for a promotion play-off spot.

Potter took over from Jim Jefferies in December in a failed bid to spark new life into a push for promotion back to the Championship.

MacPherson, a former Dunfermline defender, moved to the front of the running yesterday, according Scottish bookmakers McBookie, with the odds on the 46-year-old tumbling to 4/5.

The former St Mirren manager heads a list that includes Airdrie boss Gary Bollan and the out-of-work Derek Adams after directors indicated they were seeking someone with experience of lower-league success.

“The recruitment of the right manager and in turn the right types of player is now critical,” said chairman Bob Garmory.

“The process starts now and we hope to make an appointment within three to four weeks so we can provide the new manager as much time as possible to prepare for next season.”

The East End Park outfit have put a closing date of May 10 on written applications for the job.
