Dundee and Fife ice hockey clashes

Dundee and Fife ice hockey clashes

Paul Swindlehurst has ambitions to make Great Britain’s World Championship ice hockey squad next month.

But the English-born defenceman is also keen to finish a difficult season with Dundee Stars on a winning note.

The 21-year-old faces a double-header against arch rivals Fife Flyers this weekend with the first clash at Kirkcaldy tonight.

He said: “I really enjoyed playing for Great Britain last year. This year I didn’t expect to get called-up because of the import rule changes, but I’m in the provisional 31 which is cut to 23.

“It’s also good that Chris Blight and Sam McCluskey are in the squad which is great for the club. There are a lot of talented guys in the provisional squad but my aim is to make that team again.”

Dundee are already counted out of the end-of-season play-offs but Swindlehurst intends staying on Tayside and using ice available at The Dundee Ice Arena to sharpen his game.

Fife are look for two points to consolidate the eighth and final play-off spot and keep ninth-placed Edinburgh Capitals at bay.

The Murrayfield men are four points behind Fife with a game in hand but they go back-to-back with former league pace-setters, Braehead Clan, today and tomorrow.
