BLETHER: Eric came to Dens in swap deal with Bobby Hutchinson

A cutting from November 17, 1977, said: Dundee and Hibs were last night involved in a surprise swap, which takes left-back Eric Schaedler from Easter Road to Dens Park, and Bobby Hutchinson from the Dark Blues to Edinburgh.

The transfer was completed at Easter Road and both players will make their debuts for their new clubs tomorrow.

Schaedler, who asked Hibs for a transfer recently, is a vastly- experienced player who has been capped for Scotland.

He was a member of the Scotland World Cup squad in West Germany in 1974.

He will be in the Dundee team to play Dumbarton tomorrow.

Now 27, he joined Hibs eight years ago from Stirling Albion.

Hutchinson is four years younger than Schaedler. He has been at Dens Park for just over three years, costing Dundee just over £20,000 when they bought him from Montrose.

Although he has been a regular in the Dundee side most of this season, he had a brush with manager Tommy Gemmell earlier on and threatened to pack in playing altogether.

Eddie Turnbull plans to play Hutchinson as a striker, although he played much of his time at Dens in midfield or on the wing.

He will be at centre-forward against Partick Thistle at Easter Road tomorrow.

After four years and around a century of appearances, Schaedler returned to Hibs, and spent another four years there before signing for Dumbarton in 1985. Tragically, the following year, he died aged just 36.

After three years in Leith, Hutchinson continued his career in England, playing for clubs such as Wigan Athletic, Tranmere Rovers (two spells), Mansfield Town, Bristol City and Walsall, with two loan spells at Blackpool and Carlisle.

Hutchie was a winning skipper when he lifted the Freight Rover Trophy at Wembley Stadium as Bristol City beat Bolton Wanderers 3-0 in the final.
