Blether with Brown: Striker scored 10, next week brother nets nine

A recent question at a football quiz was… Which brothers scored 10 goals and nine goals respectively in a Scottish Cup tie as their teams netted 15 goals each?

The answer is Joe and Gerry Baker.

In January 1960, Gerry Baker scored 10 goals as St Mirren beat Glasgow University 15-0 in a Scottish Cup tie.

A year on, in February 1961, brother Joe hit a triple hat-trick as Hibs demolished Peebles Rovers 15-1.

* Margaret Deuchar asked for information over a football medal in her possession.

It belonged to her grandfather James Nicoll, who had a friend called Alec Craig.

Inscribed on the medal was ‘A Craig, 1890-91, SFA, Our Boys’.

Rob Boag, from Canada, offered: “From my recent look back into Dundee football history, I can offer an option on Margaret Deuchar’s medal.

“In season 1890-91, Our Boys won the Forfarshire Cup and the Dundee Burns Charity Cup.

“The Forfarshire Cup Final was played at East Dock Street Park on January 24, with Our Boys beating Dundee East End 6-2.

“Later in the season, Our Boys then won the Dundee Burns Charity Cup.

“That final was played at East Dock Street Park on May 23, a 5-4 victory for Our Boys over Wanderers.

“Alec Craig was a half-back with Our Boys in seasons 1890-91 and 1891-92.

“The name of Alec Craig is engraved on the Forfarshire Cup and Burns Charity Cup medals for the 1890-91 season.”
