A 65-year-old man was badly hurt in an accident on a construction site in St Andrews.

The man fell from a ladder in Queens Terrace, where a new music centre is being built for St Andrews University.

His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening but were considered serious.

The incident, which happened on Tuesday morning, is being probed by the Health and Safety Executive.

It is understood the worker fell around four metres into a hole and emergency services took several hours to rescue him and transfer him to hospital.

The man was employed by a subcontractor for Graham Construction which began building the Laidlaw Music Centre in July last year.

A spokesman for Graham Construction said: “We are carrying out an investigation into an accident on site on Tuesday.

“Our initial thoughts are with the worker involved.

“We will be liaising with the Health and Safety Executive on any inquiries that they may make.”

Police rushed to the town centre building site just before 8am to assist paramedics in aiding the injured man.

A force spokesman said: “Police in St Andrews attended a construction site in St Andrews shortly before 8am on Tuesday, December 17 following a report of an industrial accident.

“A 65-year-old man was removed from the site and taken to hospital for treatment.

“His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

“The Health and Safety Executive has been informed.”

A spokeswoman for the Health and Safety Executive, which investigates workplace accidents, said: “HSE is aware of the incident and is making initial enquiries.”

It is understood the man remains in hospital but is expected to be released shortly.

The £12.5m Laidlaw Music Centre was scheduled to be complete by autumn but work continues on its completion.

Funded by philanthropists, it is named after donor Lord Laidlaw and will boast one of the finest chamber recital halls in Scotland.
